PROCESS OF RUG-CARPET MAKING
The History of the knotted pile carpet is very old and is
generally that it originated from the present day of Iranian region or the
Armenian mountain region however there are evidence of goats and sheep being
sheared for wool as a raw material for the carpet making as far back at the 7th
millennium, the earliest surviving pile carpet is the "Pazyryk
carpet", which dates from the 5th-4th century BC.
Although the history of carpet making is pre-historic
however the process of carpet making has not changed much though the methodologies
might have changed with the intervention of Technology.

Inspiration
Inspiration – It is generally considered that any creative product starts from the process of Inspiration. There has to be a certain level of Inspiration to create a product. 1. Design – A Design is a plan or specification for the construction of a specific carpet or rug. A design in rug-carpet making is considered as the backbone of the rug creation process. In today’s world with the help of modern technology the though the process of Designing has been simplified however the creating the design from the Inspiration is still centuries old skill of an Artisan.

1. Colors – Choosing the right color in
any particular design plays and instrumental role in creating the perfect finished
rug or carpet. There can be multiple shades of a single colors and matching it
with the adjacent color requires years of experience. One needs to keep in mind
that right color fit for any particular rug or carpet as there are multiple shades
being used in a rug however a slight change in any of the used shade of color
can destroy the essence of the entire carpet or rug. Choosing the right color
for any design will deliver the required rug.
Dyeing
1. Dyeing – Dyeing is the process of coloring the fiber to get the required colored fiber for the selected colors which has been approved in the process of choosing the right color. Dyeing is a very complex process as it is dependent on various factors of the process i.e. the Fiber which is being used for the dyeing, the pigment used for dyeing the fiber, the temperature in the process of dyeing etc. A minute change in any of the variables will not provide the required colors hence the finished product might be different.
Readiness of the Loom
1. Readiness of the Loom – In the continuation of the above process Loom preparation is also being performed by the weavers. Looms are considered as the foundation of the carpet or rug. The loom preparation process is a combination of both Art and Science as the weavers needs to prepare the right number of warps for the loom through which the yarns would be woven. The right number of warps would give the desired count of knots per square inch hence the quality of the knots depends on the right preparation of the loom.
Weaving
1. Weaving – Weaving is the process of rug or carpet production. Weaving is an exception skill and it requires and a very high degree of concentration and precession. It takes years of highly focused practice and dedication to master the art of weaving. This artistry is generally being transferred from generation to generation orally and by showcasing the weaving exercise to the new recruits. Weaving is an old tradition and is being preserved by the local Artisans. Through the process of weaving once can see that the layers are being laid of on another and the shape of any particular design starts taking place.
Washing
1. Washing – The process of cleaning the carpet or rug post the weaving is called as washing. During the process of washing the unwanted elements are being removed it provides the soft the cozy lustre. Washing is also an important process as it also helps in preventing the shrinking and shredding.
Final Finishing
1. Final Finishing – This process is among the final process of finishing the rug or carpet. In the process the binding of the borders is being done to provide durability to the borders of the rugs. Carving is another process where the patterns and designs are being carved to highlight a particular pattern in the design of the rugs.
Assessment
1. Assessment – Assessment is the process where the finished work is being assessed based on the pre described parameters of each step. Though there are assessments on each and every step of the process however there is a final assessmentprocess which is more of a check the checker mechanism which makes sure whether the finished product is market ready or not. This process helps in identifying any irregularity in the process of the production. The assessor is the person with very high level of skills and should have experience in all the fields of rug making process.
